This is very sad and tragic for Hong Kong and Chinese people all over the world. The youth are the next generation of leaders and torch bearers. To be put under this immense pressure via 'exams' is impractical and even cruel. To thrive and be happy in the real world, the youth ought to be taught skills on adaptability, creativity, resourcefulness, forming synergies, improvisation, cultural understanding, critical thinking, linguistics, honing on their EQs, assertiveness, negotiation tactics etc.

Mugging and regurgitating only creates robots.

As a (retired) psychiatrist, I warn people not to jump at the most simple and superficial explanations of such suicides. Severe academic demands may not cause suicide when the students are, otherwise, well cared-for by their parents. The quality of parenting is often the key - not the external threats to self-esteem.
