Villagers make preparation before a Mazu statue parade in Longshan Village of Licheng District in Putian, southeast China's Fujian Province, Feb. 10, 2017. It is a folk custom for local people to have a Mazu statue parade to celebrate the Lantern Festival. (Xinhua)

Indeed it's tough question to answer when talk about this topic. Undoubtedly, there is a trend across China that many superstitious activities resurge again under the coverage of traditional culture. In my hometown, local communities spend a lot to rebuild the temple to honor the gods and sacrifice money and oblations to ask for protection.

No one care about it right now after the government-supported campaign against old living habits and tradtion.  we can also read many media reports about the locals to celebrate the kinds of festivals which astonish many about the origins and progress.

so can we find standards between the good and bad?

another government campaign against 'old living habits and tradition'?
didn't that happen in China back in the 1960's?
weren't there a lot of books, paintings and temples destroyed then?

Indeed! Like building villages and passing them off as old, cultural heritage .
