You do not have to be in China long before realising that parents here are in a very difficult situation. Until recently only one child.... this means that the child is so valuable that it is easy to spoil and turn into a little emperor who rules the family. Grand-parents remember the hardships and the lack of opportunity that they suffered many years ago and they demand the best for the grand-child, and expect everyone to provide even the impossible.  The education system created after the revolution remains, much of it unchanged in its attitudes and knowledge about the process of learning, and is what Parents expect schools to continue. The extended families of the past are swept apart as parents move to cities to find work. Parents still believe ideas about children and their needs that existed in the west 100 years ago, since utterly disproved.    So, they work hard to do what they feel is best for their children, but do not really know what is best. Many schools now have education courses teaching parents how to be a "good" parent, and those who do know end up sending their children abroad for their education.
English teacher and education adviser. China needs a teaching profession with less fear and more trust and honesty.
