Pizza in his enclosure in China

Animal welfare charity, Animals Asia, has said the UK's Yorkshire Wildlife Park would be a suitable new home for a "lonely" polar bear named Pizza who is living in a Chinese mall.

Pizza made global headlines in July after Animals Asia started a petition to close the "ocean theme park" at the Grandview Centre in Guangzhou, China.

Videos show the "teary-eyed" bear slumped on the floor of his enclosure.

Neither the Grandview Centre nor the Yorkshire Wildlife Park would comment.

The Yorkshire Wildlife Park houses a specially created habitat for polar bears, which is currently home to four animals.

The park's Project Polar is an "innovative habitat" for polar bears, including a research and conservation programme.

This could be Pizza's new home if authorities from Grandview Centre agree to surrender him

"We would be delighted to see Pizza end up at Yorkshire Wildlife Park," said Animals Asia's welfare director Dave Neale.

"There can be a happy ending - Pizza would not only enjoy incredible facilities, he would also be part of a community of bears."

The charity said no financial payment would be offered for the bear, "with the fear that any funds could be used to buy more animals".

The owners of the indoor zoo in Guangzhou insist they have made improvements to the park since July. But Animals Asia said conditions were still cramped, with "nothing natural".

The "ocean theme park" is also home to beluga whales, walrus calves, a wolf and arctic foxes.

While not a fan of zoos as a whole I know the Yorkshire Wildlife Park very well as it is only 15 minutes drive from my UK home and the conditions there are better than in any other zoo I have ever seen, hopefully the Guangzhou zoo will see sense and will let the animal be taken to where it is more happy.

All zoos should be closed. If you want to see wild animals go see them in the wild.

So what to do with the current captive animals? Most of the animals in the Yorkshire Wildlife Park have been rescued from other places of captivity and enjoy a decent life there.

Also how about captive breeding programs? They can do a lot to help threatened species.

Also as an aside should those wild animals you champion not be there and seen instead of there and shot as you have advocated before?

The existing animals can stay in the zoo so the owners can stop this madness slowly.

Hunting has nothing to do with zoos. Big game hunting in Finland is all about controlling the amount of animals, controlling the damage they do to new forests and keeping up traditions and culture.

Better at your wildlife park than at chester zoo, at least he's not caged.

Never been to the zoo in Chester although I know the city well.

You should visit the Yorkshire Wildlife Park and talk to them about all the animals they have rescued from terrible conditions.
