This was a CD subject in forum only a few months ago? Why is it repeated?  My views remain the same and I observe that those commenting here say the same as they did before.
To summarise again: Giving a voluntary some of money to a person for good service always leads to abuse. Tips become expected regardless of service. Businesses add a tip charge to bills. Businesses use tips to supplement low wages. To tip or not is a decision leading to dispute and embarrassment.
I urge China not to follow this American and western practice.
I expect a tip of 10% to be sent from readers of my blogs c/o China Daily.
English teacher and education adviser. China needs a teaching profession with less fear and more trust and honesty.

I can't comment on tipping in the US.

As usual Chinese posters lump all non-Chinese countries into one category - 'the West' - and fail to allow for any cultural differences.

not all non-Chinese countries expect tipping.

regarding topic recycling, this and copying topics from other sites seems to be par for the course.
some of the posters credit the original source, but some don't.

Never been to the US but in Cancun Mexico it was outrageous....
lovely place, but there attitudes towards tipping put me off ever going back
if you want something in life get off your backside, and do it yourself!! don't rely on others to do it for you

I agree about not tipping poor service.
But serving staff should be paid a living wage.
