Hitch-hiking was extremely popular in the West in the 1970s. Students who owned a car (like the  ...

In 1972 when I was in the British Army and on my way back from Wales in a Military convoy of trucks we stopped at a rest area, I was asleep in the back of a landrover at the time, unknown to me in my dream world everyone went to the restaurant for a meal. I woke up and headed to the toilet, when I got back to the car park the convoy had left, obviously the driver thought I was still sleeping in the back of the rover.

I was dressed in combat gear and obviously a soldier. I walked down the on ramp to the motorway and stuck the thumb up to the first truck driver coming down and he stopped and said where ya going mate, I replied Catterick Garrison. He said hop in then me son.

Military convoys move rather slowly as each land rover was towing a 105 pack howitzer gun, we passed the convoy long before the catterick roundabout and I was stood on the road waiting for the convoy long before they arrived, when the driver of the land rover I was supposed to be in spotted me by the side of the road in Catterick, he pulled over and was gobsmacked at how fast I had got there.

I wonder if Chinese military personnel have experienced anything like this?
