Mongolia had friendly ties with USSR. It was even sometimescalled "the sixteenth republic" - implying that it can be a niceaddition to existing fifteen parts of the Soviet state. So Russian army waspresent there too - before the WW2 and after as well. Here are some shots madeby an army officer who served in Mongolia in 1930s-1940s.

Gosh. Some of those photos are REALLY old. Maybe late 1920's. Look at the old-fashioned funny caps. Just like those worn during the Russian Civil War.
