What is Chukotka? It is sort of Russian Alaska - separated from American one by a Bering Straight. Indigenious people of Chukotka don't need visas to travel to Alaska and have had close ties in past. It's like Alaska, very snowy very cold land. However locals like to go camping here too. How? Thanks to Mr.Basov, a blogger from Chukotka we can now discover a Russian way to go camping in the middle of frozen nowhere. Take a look:

First thing you would need is a tracked vehicle to reach out there wherever no roads lead. It can be a regular tractor or some sort of popular here tracked expedition vehicles.

3.jpg

Something like this.

4.jpg

Then you need it to tow a "Balok" - this is a name for a sledge-based small house that can be towed by your tractor. I.e. camping house with local attitude.

5.jpg

Basov says he saw plenty of "Baloks" in Chukotka.Locals make it different forms and shapes. This particular one was made out of 40 feet shipping container.

6.jpg

Because there are no firewood around you gotta be taking care about your fuel in advance. See those white sacks - they are full of coal to not let you get cold out of nowhere.

7.jpg

Then you have to find a good place to put your"balok".

8.jpg

It should be near water (to enjoy fishing). It should be on some sort of small hill in order not to be blown by excess of snow or if snow starts melting (like now in spring) it shouldn't sink your balok.

Here is all set up for a nice camping trip.

10.jpg

Nice view, isn't it?

11.jpg

And here are the windows to enjoy the view.

12.jpg

Inside you can relax and take all that heavy clothes. Also Basov says even campers like to renovate their temporary houses.

13.jpg

You can fly your drone around to take shots.

14.jpg

Or just chill inside.

15.jpg

The heart of each balok is a stove. It heats the place and you can cook on it.

16.jpg

Also each Balok, says Basov, should have two-tier entrance, like a gateway, to leave all the cold outside.

Did you like this way of camping? If yes, thanks to Basov he shared those cool photos!
