Why were there 57 in one class? No teacher can teach that many kids with any degree of success

Such news might indicate a lack of training for teachers in China. I have spent 3 years trying to develop teaching into a profession and not just a job. How well are teachers here trained and qualified. Is there any kind of annual appraisal for them? Is there a system of continuous professional development? If so, it does not seem to be very effective. Treat teachers as casual labourers who just do as they are told and you end up with the poorest educational provision possible. Train them to be professionals and teachers will respond by providing their very best.

Teaching in China is not yet a profession. A profession demands high standards of training, practice and assessment. A profession has to meet professional standards, with annual appraisal with reward or training. It should encourage and monitor continuous professional development. It should encourage the sharing and distribution of knowledge and skills. It should encourage initiative, and provide all necessary resources to enable a professional teacher to do the work well.
So, to say that a bad teacher should leave the profession is incorrect. She/he must find another JOB.
