What is your obsession about "Captialist" this and "Capitalist`' that? You should consult a doctor ...

You conspicuously failed to mention the CHINESE OBSESSION with academic degrees. It was not planted in the heads of the Chinese people by capitalists. It has native roots that go back at least two thousand years to feudal rule. It amazes me that the Communist Egalitarians have utterly failed to level the playground for all children to get a worthy education. Elite universities only accept student candidates from elite high schools, and these again do not recruit from their catchment area only but from across a highly educated elite. I personally think that education has been perverted nowhere as deeply as in China, where holding a degree is more important than holding a degree of a subject that is in high demand. Your average Chinese university degree holder always tells you where he or she studied, not what they studied. Once they have their degree, they feel entitled to a cushy civil servant position that is possibly outside of their turf of academic specialisation. One wonders why the Chinese even go to the trouble of offering distinct courses at their colleges and universities. Why not simply put all undergraduates through the same mishmash of subjects and give them a degree at the end of their "studies"?

I agree that the Chinese obsession with "golden" diplomas from Beida or Tsinghua is counter-productive because paper titles do not mean anything. That's why I am advocating more of a community or city-based "People's Colleges or Universities" system instead of elitist National Universities.

In the U.S.A., California has a good system consisting of two-year Community Colleges, followed by four-year City Colleges or California State Universities and ending with the "world-class" University of California System. Bernie Sanders is proposing a nationwide system with free-tuition for everyone.

In the province of Sichuan, the city of Chengdu --- which is a Tier-2 city -- has all the National Universities but the rest of Sichuan doesn't have any. And then you have Beijing -- which is the Capital of the PRC -- lording it over the rest of the country because almost all the top National Universities are located there. It's too elitist instead of populist.

Ask Chinese if they think they need a university degree in sinology rather than an engineering deg ...

You're confusing EDUCATION with TRAINING, both of which are sorely needed in China for the PEOPLE not the ELITES. There's a serious mismatch in what the educational system is producing and what is needed by both society and the economy in China. What is needed is a community-based educational/training system for the PEOPLE -- in the rural countryside, small cities, inland provinces -- where they get both TRAINING for work and EDUCATION for life. That way, they can cope with the rapid changes occurring in China.

While I agree that China needs TECHNICAL UNIVERSITIES and SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTES to pursue specialized TRAINING and RESEARCH in technical STEM disciplines, only 10% of the population will ever need those kinds of schools. The rest -- the 90% of the population -- won't need those highly-specialized knowledge/training but will need more practical education and relevant training to help them upgrade their skills while elevating their MORAL, SPIRITUAL, SOCIAL and CULTURAL lives as citizens of the country.

As an example, the People's Colleges or Universities don't have to offer PhD programs in Computer Science but they could offer B.S. degrees in Computer Science for working people so they can design their own websites or build their own apps for their own e-commerce companies located in their communities. They could also offer courses in e-commerce such as online customer support or online marketing, etc.

Not every College or University needs to offer courses in Quantum Electrodynamics or have laboratories to do Semiconductor Fabrication, not every university graduate will go on to design Low-temperature Superconductive Magnetically-levitated trains or build a Higgs Boson supercollider or perform supercomputer simulations of aerodynamic designs for new airplanes...

Here is a list of the typical vices we find in the Chinese characteristics; you are welcome to comme ...

Here's one undisputed characteristic of Europeans.
Killing for land and money.
For the past 500 years Europeans have committed genocide on the largest scale in world history
to steal 3 continents from the native inhabitants.

Your whining about China is subjective and nobody cares about a self important prude.

But the European characteristic of committing genocide for land and money is undisputable.
If capitalism promotes innovation and creativity then why aren't scientists and artists the richest people in a capitalist nation?
