Ninety nine percent of students don't wash their hands before lunch or dinner on my university campus in Nanjing.
Classrooms are dirty. Swimming pool locker rooms are gross.
Streets are dirty. Tables in university cafeterias are greasy as heck.
No basic education and little understanding. Kids crap where they feel like just because mama loves kido blah blah. If you have spent anytime here you already know this...

If Chinese kids are taught good hygenie, then why did I see a kid who was around 5-6 years old, peeing in to a trash can in the middle of the mall last night?? So many times i see disturbing non-sense behaviour like this. In no way is this good hygenie. How is he gonna wash his hands? What about the person who needs to change the trash bag?? YUCK!!!
I am me and that is something you will never be, no matter how hard you try!!

China seems to of cornered the market. Academics are doing PHDs on how Chinese raise children, the ...

You can't parlay your child rearing experience into what goes on in the rest of the world, Dusty. While I agree with your method of child rearing, others might think lavishing on their children everything they never had is the best way to raise kids.
There's a very specific reason children in China are called Little Emperors. Each family - parents, 2 sets of grandparents and possibly great grandparents have only one child to dote on. That child is denied nothing in these affluent Chinese times. Thus their attitude becomes one of an emperor: I want it, I will have it. With such an attitude, it is difficult, once that child hits mainstream society and meets up with other children just like him/her.
In my opinion, that is Chinese parents' greatest disservice to their children. As far as hygiene goes, all the Chinese I know were taught adequately. But then, this kid is a teenager. This might be a form of rebellion. My 14 year old grandson would rather lie than brush his teeth and wash his hair, too.
The journey IS the destination!
