I think it all depends on the mood of the organization. Some says USA is ahead, some China and others put something else. So I do not go in the no 1, no 2 game.

Does it Matter Whether China’s Economy is Number One?


It matters for most Chinese Capitalists from Beijing and whole China.
Denial, according the psychoanalysts, is one of the most primary mechanisms of defense. It consists in the attitude of denying or minimizing obvious facts of reality with which the individual can´t  cope or whose irresponsibility is unable to meet.

Luxembourg.Monaco and Norway, all have very high GDP per Capita, but when it comes to in contributing to solve international major issues, economically and politically,respectively, their GDP per capita is  irrelevant in that regard.

And there are many other 'factors/capacity '  very impotant to be relevant  where China, US and other top major Countries have those Factors (size of various non fixed resource capacity)
