Just because Australia won the Asian Cup doesn't mean the level of football in Asia or Austalia is very high. In the latest FIFA ranking Australia ranks 100.

The level of football in Asia is terrible. Even the biggest Asian stars like Keisuke Honda are nothing special. Could you name one Asian football star?

The only way to improve the level of Asian football is to send more young players to Europe to proper training and play against other top players.

i agree, Soccer Australia which is the governing body here in Australia whinges at FIFO regularly in order to try to get an easy way to the second stage of the World Cup.  Australia's played in 4 different groups over the years  and frankly the national team is not that good, but the local league in it's various incarnations is even worse.

Just because Australia's managed to have a few players picked up my major EU clubs over the years have given the local population the idea that Australia is a heavy hitter in soccer, rather than the flyweights they are in reality.

Alex Del Piero came to Australia close to his 40's and scored 24 goals in 48 games. That gives some perspective how good the league is.

Go to a few matches here, it's abysmal.  Half the teams are organised on European country of origin, eg: Greek, Serbian and Bosnian immigrants all have major clubs here.  They mostly will not hire out of their ethnic group so you'll never see a Serb playing for the Croatia club for example.

The national team got thrashed a few years ago by a Man U side made up of reserves and a couple of final year players at the end of their contracts and the Man U club was playing at the end of the EU season so you can imagine how tired they were.
