Chinese movies are more down to earth than their western counterparts. Most Western people watch movies to indulge in a little fantasy.... to let loose. Also... language is a barrier. To go watch a movie and have to read subtitles means you can't enjoy the visual effects as much.

given the restriction on the content that Chinese films are made: for example there is a ban on fantasy films that include time travel, and the over-whelming plethora of 'patriotic' films where it is acceptable to show soldiers from a certain country killed graphically and in improbable ways, there is limited appeal of Chinese films outside an Asian market.
equally there are so many bland formulaic films that are frankly dull and poorly written.
