Newly released figures show that there has been a 20 percent rise in sexual offences recorded by the police in England and Wales in the 12 months to the end of March 2014.

According to a report published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the number of reported rape cases has risen by 27 percent, while other sex crimes have increased by 17 percent.

“Part of the rise in sexual offences is related to the effect of the Operation Yewtree investigation which has brought to light a large number of historic sexual offences," an ONS official said, adding, “The increase is also likely to reflect a broader Yewtree effect whereby more victims are coming forward to report sexual offences to the police.”

The report also showed that violent crimes have risen by 6 percent during the reporting period and that deaths due to dangerous driving have also risen from 174 occurrences to 282.

It also showed that the number of police officers in England and Wales had dropped to its lowest in 12 years.

Britain has been rocked by a series of pedophile scandals in the last three years, which broke out after the death of the BBC’s former presenter, Jimmy Savile, who has been branded as one of UK’s most prolific known sexual predators.

Savile died in 2011 and following his death, hundreds of allegations of sex abuse and rape of minors became public.
Several high-profile figures have been arrested in connection with the multiple investigations into the abuse scandal surrounding the BBC’s former presenter.
