Share Why I'd Choose A Chinese School Over An American School (for my child)
2016-2-28 08:28
Having taught more than 4,300 classes with about 3,200 students since coming to China, and having interviewed several hundred students for English assessment and placement, I've learned a lot about how English is taught and many of the problems and pitfalls that students face. I came to China in 2011. I've taught, on average, about 20 classes a week. Some semesters, I taught as many as 32 classes. Others, as few as 20. I took some time off to travel back to my home in the USA. Nonetheless, I' ...

Share Why Chinese Students Excel
2016-2-28 08:07
This is a repost from another blog that I wrote on a different website. It reflects the rigorous requirements for Chinese education and reflects why students in China excel in education as they do, especially when they come to the West for college. Education in China is not for the weak of heart. It takes a lot of hard work. I know. I see students doing it every day. It always makes me feel so proud of them to see their diligence and grit in getting their education. The average Chinese ...

Share Do You Want To Study in the USA?
2016-2-20 09:40
I teach students who will study abroad for college/university. I often hear that they spend from 25,000 RMB up to 100,000 RMB for services that help them in the selection and application process. Applying for a university or college in the USA is actually not as difficult as many believe. The problem is that most students don't know where to go and look for the information that they need. All of the information that they need is online. However, also due to Internet restrictions, many don't know ...

Share Why I Continue To Teach In China
2016-2-17 19:46
I've been in China now for almost 4.5 years. More than 4,000 classes and nearly as many students has given me experiences I'll never forget. I didn't come here in need of job. I semi-retired in 2005, nearly 11 years ago. I wrote a book that sold quite well during that time and got hundreds of invitations to speak at various venues regarding my message. However, after having many years building a private school and watching it thrive and succeed, I never got education out of my heart and ...

Share A Foreigner Learning Chinese
2016-2-6 15:31
I've been in China for 4.5 years. I've taught 4,234 classes since I came here. That's almost 1,000 classes a year; 500 a term. That's an average of about 30 classes or more a week. I stay busy. I've made several attempts at getting a Chinese teacher to teach me the Chinese language. I can presently recognize about 200 Chinese characters and can speak perhaps a few more words than that. But, finding a teacher who can teach a foreigner is a bit challenging here in Henan. First of all, there are ...

Share 4,214 English Classes And Counting
2016-1-11 20:37
It has been 1,601 days since I landed here in Henan in Central China. Since that time, I've taught 4,214 classes and about 2,150 students as well as 300+ Chinese English teachers. I've taught every age from primary school to the eMBA students at Zhengzhou University. I've taught oral English, IELTS Listening, IELTS Speaking, TOEFL Listening, TOEFL Speaking, AP U.S. History, AP U.S. Geography and have lectured on the book I wrote 10 years ago. I've given 36 public presentations in numerous colleg ...

Share 10 Ways To Improve Your English
2016-1-3 12:33
I've been teaching here in China (Henan) for 4.5 years. I've taught more than 2,000 students in about 2,500 classes. I've seen some students who advance quickly and others who don't. There is no big secret to learning English. There are some tried and tested ways to get better. Many will say, "Practice makes perfect." This is a noble suggestion and certainly contains some truth. However, if you practice something that isn't correct, you are becoming perfect at the wrong thing. You need t ...

Share A Great Tool At Baidu
2015-12-30 15:32
Perhaps I overlooked a remarkable tool for learning Chinese (for a foreigner like me) or those learning English. It is at (you can also find it at I've used both of these in the past to get a more accurate translation, however, there are a few features that are either new to both sites or I've simply overlooked. One is the button to turn on or off Pinyin. This is very helpful, especially for foreigners who want to learn accurate pronunciation of characters. ...

Share 10 Facts About Good Parenting
2015-12-15 07:05
As every teacher knows, most children reflect their parents in attitude, life priorities, life skills and relationship skills. I have come to the conclusion that when I teach a child, I'm far more interested in the attitude of the parent than I am in the abilities of the child. Even a child who is not a good student can turn around and become one so long as they are guided properly by parents and teachers. Here are 10 facts I know about good parenting. I know these facts from having raised tw ...

Share FREE SAT Training In China
2015-12-6 06:28
My biggest dream in China is helping students achieve more to create a better future for themselves. My design has always been to reach those students who are dedicated enough to think big and work hard for success. I don't think it should matter whether your family is rich or poor in order for you to get a great education. (In fact, I've had numerous offers from one billionaire and another who is worth more than $500 million, who have invited me to come to the more affluent areas of my city in ...
