Life-Long Learning

Many people quit their formal education after just 12 years. Others go on from 4 to 8 years more. However, everyone should dedicate themselves to be life-long learners.

I just turned 60 years old in September. It is hard for me to believe that I'm this age. However, my zeal and zest for learning has only increased with age. I study more, read more and learn more now than I did when I was in college.

I'm an educator. Any teacher, professor or educator of any kind, certainly should be dedicated to learning as much as they are committed to teaching. I meet and talk to many teachers who believe that they have reached the pinnacle of their knowledge and who are not yet 40 years old. They refuse to learn more, thus, they want others to believe that they are achieved experts in their particular field of study. Be assured, they are not.

An accomplished scholar will be the first to tell you that they don't see themselves as accomplished. They see themselves as the ever eager learner and student. I've personally known 4 outstanding, mega New York Times bestselling authors. All four would quickly shy away from any thought that they have reached the top of their fields.

Life is about growing. Life is about the journey; not the destination. No books are written on 'life at the top.' Tens of thousands are written on 'how I achieved success.' Dr. Robert Schuller said it best when he said that, 'failure is never final and success is never-ending.' Success isn't a destination. It is a mode, a life-style for effective living. It is about choosing excellence in every area of life.

Dr. John Maxwell always says in his books on leadership that, 'Leaders are readers. They are learners. They are information gatherers. They never stop learning. Their hunger to learn more drives them forward. Their appetite for knowledge is unquenchable.'

I love stories about people who kept learning even into their twilight years of life. People like my step-father, Ray Mack Thompson. He's 88 years old and still has a voracious thirst for learning. These are the people who have truly achieved more in their lives.

When you stop learning, you really stop living. You've reached the end of your road. Nothing can become better. There's no further opportunity for growth. You'll become stagnate and stale.

Never stop learning. You should be a far more excellent student today than you were when you were younger. If not, you're wasting your life and just waiting for old age and your eventual demise. I pray that you get a knew hunger for learning. I pray that you choose to grow, learn and live a more fulfilling life. You'll be happier. You'll be more confident. You'll be satisfied within your soul.
