Ciao, Fabio Cannavaro

La Gazzetta dello Sport, which is the biggest newspaper in Italy, has a point when it argues that it would be a mistake for  Guangzhou Evergrande to sack its current manager Fabio Cannavaro, in light of the fact that Guangzhou Evergrande remains a point ahead of Shanghai SIPG at the top of the league standings.

Moreover, Guangzhou Evergrande's decision to jawbone Fabio Cannavaro into attending an “enterprise culture studies class" sounds like an abysmal decision that you wouldn't expect an international company with global reach like Evergrande to make. What could Evergrande's top brass teach Fabio Cannavaro? Show him how to raise capital or manage cash burn? It just doesn't add up, duh, since Evergrande's own finances are stretched to the limit. Its high debt load is another vexed issue for Evergrande's management.

A plausible explanation would be that Evergrande simply wants to use this as a pretext to replace Fabio Cannavaro with another manager. In other words, it's a message sent by Evergrande to Fabio Cannavaro.  Subtext: off you go, Fabio Cannavaro .  Still remember Shakespeare'history play  Henri IV? That's what  Henri IV tells Falstaff in this play.

Yet Fabio Cannavaro is not Falstaff. You can hardly rid  Fabio Cannavaro without paying an eye-watering fee, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. And there is a case to be  made that such moves would antagonize Marcello Lippi, who is said to have been  Fabio Cannavaro's mentor.   In effect, Marcello Lippi, the current manager of China national team, is also in a tight spot after the team failed to defeat the Philippine in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifier.

Could it be a sign that the Chinese Football Association is going to send both of them home and hire some new foreign managers?  José Mourinho, are you here? There is a job opening in China. Go, go, go.
