Everybody loves gold, for gold is one of the most valuable things in the world. It has long been used as money in all parts of the globe, and a man who owns a good sum of gold can be called the rich. So, It is nature that there are many expressions related to gold in different languages. In English, we see such phrases as golden rule, golden mean, golden age, a gold digger, etc. In Chinese, there are also many expressions using the word gold. Here, I’d like to talk only two of them, which not only contains the word “gold”, but the word “jade” as well.

One  idioms is “金科玉律(jīn kē yù lǜ )”. It means golden laws and precious rules, which was originally used to describe the perfect provisions of laws and regulations. We find it first appeared in the article entitled “剧秦美新“ (Eulogizing to the New Dynasty)by 杨雄(Yang Xiong), an official and scholar in the Western Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-24 A.D.). Today, we use the idiom “金科玉律”to mean a code or credo that must be followed and cannot be changed.

The other one is called “金玉良言(jīn yù liáng yán)”, meaning the best advice or instruction. The words “金玉“ are gold and jade, and “良言” good advice. The idiom uses gold and jade to describes a piece of advice or instruction given by someone is very precious. For example, the idiom can be used in such sentences: “Prevention is better that cure" is always the best advice when it come to health care ( “预防胜於治疗"是养生保健生活的金玉良言); When we work, there is a piece of good advice we should always remember: well begun is half done (在工作时,有一则我们必需牢记的金玉良言就是:好的开始是成功的一半).

I like this idom especially in winter, as there are a lot of wheat planting in my hometown, western Shandong Province. Auspicious snow can bring a good harvest to the farmers. :)
