What does volunteer work bring to me?

It seems that happy times is always short. Now I miss my partners who have worked with me as volunteers at Taihu MIDI Electronic Music Festival during 15th-17th May in Suzhou very much. After three days’  living together in camps, serving in the rest room for those musicians from all over the world and playing in the amusement park, we have become close friends and known very well about each other. This time, I experienced totally different things as it is a recreational activity. There were so many outgoing foreigners dancing to the music on the square, the atmosphere is perfect. As a result, we volunteers were also immersed in the exciting festival itself, almost forgetting we were working and thus did not feel tired at all. The musicians we received were all kind and nice, they chatted with us and allowed us to take pictures with them pleasantly. What is more important, they did great job. I love their professional and vigorous performance very much, especially Steo le Panda, The Subs, Mumbai Science, Sulumi and Joris Delacroix. Guess what? Now I am used to electronic music and start loving it.

When I shared my funny experience in Wechat Circle, a friend commented: ”It seems you really like volunteer work.” I have been volunteers for several times actually, such as 2013 Cross-strait Youth Volunteer Service Workshop, 2014 IMFT(International Mayor’s Forum on Tourism), 2014 24-hour Football Match for Charity in Henan Province and 2015 MIDI Electronic Music Festival in Suzhou. Yeah, I do like volunteer work, as to why I love it, I think for a while. What are the gains and losses then?

First, you have to sacrifice your free time for other activities or even risk skipping your classes. Second, you have to pay the transportation fees by yourself. Third, do not expect money for your volunteer work, as it is your choice to serve for the certain organization. Besides free working meals and lodging, (3-star hotels or camps), an experience to show off, a piece of glorious certificate, a working ID, a T-shirt or a set of sports clothes, usually not so good-looking(That depends on the season), what else can we gain from volunteer work?

Generally speaking, every volunteer work is a totally different experience for me as the theme of the event and my position change. I benefit a lot from those experiences, such as team spirit building, reception etiquette, how to get to know each other quickly as well as how serve the guests better and offer proper help. The most important and valuable things I gain from my volunteer work are the excellent teammates I meet and like-minded friends I make with. You know it is a kind of self-improvement when you talk with someone wise and exchange your ideas and life experiences. At the same time, you have the chance to broaden your horizons and enter a new world. As to me, what is really rewarding is that I make some close friends and we keep in touch with each other for a long time. Sometimes, I cannot help recalling what we have done together and feel grateful to have met them in the volunteer work. Don’t we all need sincere friends?
