Book knowledge vs. Practical experience

Knowledge can be acquired from many sources. Formal education and social practices are two of them.

Formal education enables us to acquire knowledge in a systematic way, but this acquisition remains at the theoretical level. Some students may not utilize what he or she just studied and continues to passively receive the book knowledge, which directly leads to poor learning effect. However, formal education has some unparalleled superiorities. For example, we can learn from the past through the study of history and avoid making the same mistakes in the contemporary society.

Compared to formal education, social practices are a more direct way for us to experience life and acquire practicable knowledge. After class, some students who own similar interests can gather together, collect data and do social practices. The whole process of research may be carried out smoothly, because the curiosity urges these students to solve problems and explain confusions. Sometimes, they may make mistakes, but it is still a good way to learn and to make innovations.

To conclude, book knowledge and practical experience are both important for students. We should weld them together. In this case, the acquisition of knowledge can be more effective.
