If I Were Balinese, I'd Kick Australian Out of my Country

Oh. My. God.

That's what I think when the news shows scenes of "schoolies" (the Australian rite of passage from school into adulthood, celebrated with insane amounts of alcohol and parties) tramping all over Bali in Bintang shirts and flip-flops, spilling their cocktails all over another country's soil.

"Schoolies" or "Leavers" is great - when it's confined to our own country. They're our kids, so if they want to booze, find romance, dance, party and get wasted for a week, they have every right to do so - over here. But taking it to Bali (which from Western Australia is only a $200 return ticket sometimes) is another story.

Australians often frequent Bali as it is a short plane ride away, our dollar is worth a fortune over there and to enjoy the people, culture and, all too often, extremely cheap booze and nightlife. A lot of people in Australia argue that because we're giving the locals business we have every right to wander the streets drunk and behave uproariously.

If I were Balinese then, yeah, the business would be great, mixing cocktail after cocktail for these Aussies, but in the back of my mind I'd be fuming. I'd be thinking what gives you the right to turn up here and trash my country?

Fortunately, there are also a lot of Australians that go to Bali to see the culture, to explore a different world and treat the people and place with respect.

I think the travellers who go to Bali purely to drink and act up need to think a bit more about their actions. After all, you can dance around in your underwear in your own house, but you wouldn't do it in your neighbours. Why are countries any different?
