Author and member of the Chinese Writers Association Zhang Anhua recently paid a visit to the Luntai Euphrates Poplar Forest Park in Luntai County, Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Here is his report.

When you cross the Taklimakan, China's largest desert, over the vast sand seas and sand peaks, you will have a dry mouth and tired body and mind. Please do not give up. You must continue to move forward, because as long as you walk firmly to the north, you will meet the water of life that can cure your exhaustion and strengthen your vitality. Its name is Caohu, or Grass Lake.

If you suspect you can't find Caohu accurately and quickly in the vast desert, please don't worry. When you get there, many people will tell you with a sunny smile that you will see the Euphrates poplar trees first, and then along the path of the trees, which are called as the soul of the desert, all the way forward, will definitely find the lake.

There is a forest covering 436,000 mu (29,067 hectares) around the lake. Once you arrive at Luntai, you will be excited to find that there is not only the beautiful and sweet water, but also the wonderful red willows and reeds, amazing music and stories of the western regions, admirable calligraphy works and paintings.

The people in Luntai love art as much as life. Many artists and art institutions from the inland areas have formed a deep friendship with the people there.
