During the state visit in France, President Gauck visited the memorial site Oradour-sur-Glane on 4 September, 2013. He is the first German president to visit the town of Oradour-sur-Glane. Together with French President Hollande and World War II survivor Robert Hebras, he remembered the 642 men, women and children who were killed by Nazi soldiers in 1944.
