Astronomers from several nations have just released a formidible video showing the formation of galaxies, nebulae, clusters and blackholels in a 350 million light year cube.  The team was headed up by Mark Vogelsberger from MIT and included resarchers from Cambridge, Harvard, MIT, Princeton and The Space Telescope (hubble) Instutute.

The simulation traces the evolution over a 13.4 billion year period dating to a mere 12 million years after the formation of our universe otherwise known as Big Bang.  There are over 41,000 galaxies created during the simulation.  100,000 lines of code were written and 500 terrabytes of data was generated.  It took 3 months to run the simulation on 3 of the worlds most powerful supercomputers.  It would take at least 2000 years to run the simulation on a domestic PC.

The results were published in Nature.
