Shi, a 47-year-old guy from Chengdu, Sichuan has taken part in gaokao, China's college entrance exam for 17 consecutive times and this year will be his 18th time to do so. Due to his perseverance, some people call him "the most stubborn examinee of college entrance exam."

Liang already successfully runs a building material business, and his son entered university in 2011, but he still thinks he won't be fulfilled without receiving higher education.

I guess I don't understand why he is so obessed with the gaokao. He already has what we are striving to have through college education. Of course there is nothing wrong about having a higher pursuit, but there are some other ways out.

"I don't think you will have a promising prospect if you dropped out from college because I well know that to start a business is difficult especially on the condition of lacking enough knowledge," Liang said so. He still considers university students to be privileged people.

Well. Maybe it's true in the past, but it's not the case today any more. It is no longer the time when university graduates are regarded as rare talents. Higher education should no longer be simply regarded as a way of changing one's fate, and it's only a course of seeking self-improvement.

But you can obtain knowlegae through so many other channels in today's world. Instead of learning online or reading books about business by himself, he wastes his spare time in all these years to prepare for the exam. What can I say..

Liang first took the gaokao in 1983, when he was 16. The dreaded exam was then deemed as a ticket to changing one's fortune - but he was not admitted to a single school in the exam.

Finally, in 1985, an offer came from a local technical school. Liang accepted it but soon dropped out, believing he deserved to go to a better college. He prepared to re-sit the exam the following year, when he was working part-time. His efforts again did not produce the desired result.

"My friends found my pursuit to be a bit baffling, since I was spending my time and energy on things that seem to be irrelevant to my life now," Liang said, "but I never feel frustrated or despair at gaokao." He spent alomost all his spare time in preparing for the exam after the Spring Festival.

His bookcase overflows with the reference books he has used during the years that he has been taking the exam.

His aspiration is to study mathematics in Sichuan University. "Although the threshold point is up by 200 this year, I am still confident since those questions are easy for me. I just need to improve my speed and retain the best attitude."

"Teenagers nowadays cannot know how much we yearned to go to college 30 years ago," he said. "University students were branded as privileged people."
