China's social insurance to cover foreigners(Xinhua)"The law specifies that all workers will have the right to five forms of insurance: basic endowment ensurance, basic medical insurance, work injury insurance, unemployment insurance and maternity insurance."

Sounds great! Power to the workers!

Problem is, employers spit in the general direction of this law and could give a rat's arse about it.

Who enforces this law in China?
My Chinese gf says, "Law? There is no law in China!"

Your gf is not right!

We have had so far this year, 3 inspections in our office in Shanghai from the labor department authorities. The first 2 were specifically to check on the foreigners working there. It so happened that at the moment the 2nd inspection took place, we were holding a meeting with our Korean counterparts that were visiting. We had to show them their passports and visas as well as the hotel reservations and return tickets. As for the 3rd inspection (late Feb.) our HR manager said it was specifically centered in inspecting working conditions, salaries and insurance compliance of the staff.

I do believe that other cities might not be as hard as Shanghai, but here, in Pudong, no foreigner moves without the PSB knowing!
