It's well enough known that if you get seriously drunk in Thailand (or other places around the world) that you can or will loose your passport eventually. Saying it was stolen is a lot easier than saying I was dead drunk with a hooker in Soi Cowboy and my passport got lost.
Until proved otherwise I have grave reservations that the missing passports were used to gain entry to the plane. The last thing I saw on the news was that this allegation was denied, but they did say it was being investigated along with all other potential causes. In other words the authorities are keeping an open mind as to what caused the crash.
