Hundreds of protesters who were expressing their opposition to the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline were arrested outside the White House on Sunday.

The protest, which was organized by a group of students, started at Georgetown University and the protesters marched from there to the White House.

Along the way, they also stopped at US Secretary of State John Kerry’s house.

“The youth really understand the traditional methods of creating change are not sufficient … so we needed to escalate,” said one of the protesters, Johnson, just before she was arrested at the White House.

According to the environmentalist organizers 350.org, almost 400 protesters were arrested at the White House. Prior to the arrests, the protesters had been warned that they should not block the sidewalk or strap themselves to the White House fence.

Keystone XL is a proposed tar sands pipeline that would connect western Canada to the US Gulf Coast. The 1,700-mile pipeline would carry 800,000 barrels of tar sands oil per day across the US to refineries in Texas.
Environmentalists say in addition to carbon-dioxide emissions caused by the Keystone XL pipeline, oil spills and their subsequent fallout also endanger communities nearby.

The project requires a Presidential Permit to move forward and activists are demanding US President Barack Obama to stand up to big oil corporations and stop the pipeline.

No Fight Zone:
So the glorious 7 Russia-China-Brasilia-Iran-India-Germany-Spain and all that want democracy have to create a NO FIGHT ZONE - freezing all the accounts of paper -- urgentley

Mark:
So in the "Land of the Free", a bunch of university kids peacefully protesting a pipeline will get arrested by the bus load for "obstructing the sidewalk". Everyone else, however, has to suffer foreign-backed armed insurgents toppling their government "with respect". Makes sense!!!

davecad in reply to Mark:
we need to stop believing that we in the land of the free .when people wake up and start to realise this then instead of a few hundred outside the white house there should be a few million people then maybe they will start to listen .

margarida:
Where is the DEMOCRACY IN THE US? That gives them the right to invade, murder, destroy and destabilize any country they decide is not democratic? HYPOCRITES WITH GUNS!BULLIES but, not much more than that !

KB:
Peaceful marchers arrested. Yet they expect Kiev violent protester to be allowed to do as they please. USA citizens watch out your freedom of expression is gone.

r bayu wind:
