Widow of executed North Korean general Jang Song-Thaek is dead according to reports

THE aunt of Kim Jong-un, whose husband Jang Song-Thaek was executed in North Korea last month, has died according to reports.

Questions were raised after Kim Kyong Hui did not show up for an event to mark the anniversary of her brother Kim Jong il's death on December 17 2013.

The 67-year-old has not been seen in public since last September and a Government source claimed she killed herself or died from a heart attack.

Korean news website The Cosun Ilbo said Pyongyang intelligence services believe she is dead but have not been able to confirm it.

The source said North Korea are trying to determine if Mrs Kim went abroad for medical treatment.

A government official told the website: "There are many rumours going around about Kim Kyong-hui, but we're not yet able to confirm any of them."

Japan based newspaper The Daily NK claimed Mrs Kim had left North Korea to seek medical treatment after a heart attack due to the stress of her husband's execution.

Mrs Kim is the only sister of former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and the daughter of the founder of the nation Kim Il-sung.

Her husband Mr Chang was executed in a purge for "acts of treachery", state media announced on 12 December 2013.

They described the current leader's former mentor as "worse than a dog" and said he was moved from his post because he lead a "dissolute and depraved life."

He was considered the second most powerful official in North Korea while his wife had been a stalwart of the regime.

Born in 1946, Mrs Kim had apparently suffered alcoholism and depression after the suicide of her daughter in 2006.
