I have always been amazed at the people who say Chinese is hard. It is gramatically very simple and you just need to know very few words to be fluent.

But people are happy to say Chinese is hard and Chinese like to hear how hard Chinese language is.

Writing is another story though...

Western languages use tones in different ways, for example in English if a sentence rises in tone at the end it makes it into a question so we tend to do this when we speak other languages, in Chinese this can make a big difference

I agree with Futsanglung that it is a good idea but sadly the quality of all language teaching in the UK is appalling and the idea would only work if better quality teachers were found.
