Identification of perpetrators

Obviously, not many of those disparaging the initial report for identifying the perpetrators by nationality have ever read, watched or heard news reports in other countries.

In the States for example - and no sense trying to post links, I went to Google and their are too many - stories on crime involving ethnic minorities always begin with the ethnicity mentioned:
"The suspect - a black male..."
"An Hispanic male today..."
"The suspect was an African-American male..."
"A Chinese-American..."

They do love those hyphenated distinctions.

And etc.

Usual double standards and double speak.

Now, around the world, if anyone even looks Arabic, they use the religious qualifier.

"So and so - a follower of Islam..."
"An Islamic so and so..."

and etc.

As I posted in another thread, in Hong Kong, almost every single report of crime is prefaced with "A mainlander..." or even "The suspect, a mandarin-speaking male..." and this whether or not the suspect was local or not. If it turns out the suspect is local - What, oh my God - do you mean local HK people actually commit crimes? No! - then there is never a retraction in the press - although I have seen one stating that "Oh, we made a mistake in our initial report and the subject was a local - a recent legal immigrant from Guangdong"

Using ethnicity or race to identify - happens all over the world.

One thing you wont see though is "Today, an American (or Canadian or British - although in the Londo-based press they do like to identify if the suspect is Welsh or Irish etc.), white, anglo-saxon protestant, millionaire banker was suspected of..." instead, in this case, they would identify the person more often by name - can't disrespect those millionaire bankers after all - "Today, Ken Lay was charge with stealing millions from his workers..."

The only true negatives in this thread were the insult from tekvacuous that the largest percentage of Chinese women were prostitutes - and that most Chinese men beat women.

The reporting was normal - even though I agree that the word used as a slur was unnecessary, it would have been enough to say Japanese.

I, the offender, am offended

I didn't want to be the first to write about this, because I myself am guilty of offending people in this thread.  I knew it wouldn't be long before others wrote, and now that the ice is broken, I have something to say.

But before I say my piece to tek., let me clear my conscience.  I purposely used an offensive word in this thread to make a point.  I knew that some people would be offended, yet I chose to use that word anyway.  I was trying to make a point about a different word that I thought was also offensive.  Some people have written that they see my purpose in using such a word, and I thank those people for their understanding.  Others, however, have expressed offense or embarrassment that I would use such a word.

Whether or not my intent was clear no longer matters to me.  I apologize for using the word.  For those who were offended, I am truly sorry.  I promise never to use that word again.

Thank you for letting me get that off my chest.

And now to tekvicious, who has written that:
“soooo large a percentage of Chinese women are [whores].”
So with five O's.

Do you realize, tek., that this is a Chinese forum?  That many of the readers here are Chinese women?  That many of the readers here are Chinese men who have mothers and sisters and wives and daughters?  Do you realize that many of the readers here have Chinese friends?  Do you realize that some readers here, like canchin and tsupasat and myself are foreigners who have Chinese families?  Wives and inlaws (mothers and sisters and cousins) and friends?

Do you realize that just because you spend all your time in China whoring and just because you meet a lot of whores, that doesn't mean that the majority of all Chinese women in China are whores?  You need to apologize or explain yourself.  I cannot imagine a reasonable explanation, though, so on second thought you'd better just apologize and withdraw your remark.

Where is wchao37 when we truly need him?  LGK made a rhetorical comment about mainland prostitutes a few months ago, and he was hounded for weeks about apologizing.  This tekvicious guy deserves at least equal treatment for this remark, which is much more offensive, much less defendable than LGK's remark ever was.

“soooo large a percentage” . . . I'd better not say any more before I lose my temper.

General info

Because so many have and are reading this thread, and as I see both what tekvacuous stated that "In any case I've seen guys here in China beat more women than in my whole life in Canada." - which in itself draws the question - If you have seen it - what did you do to stop it? - and the cascading misinformation about Canada - and also my loss of control in reacting to the mouthings of such a neanderthal; I feel I should provide some stats - in one of my usually over long pompous posts.

Canada - my Canada - is not free from that which causes revulsion - unfortunately.

Rape Statistics - Canada
1 in 4 women will be sexually assaulted during her lifetime. Of these, half will be against women under the age of 16 (Ontario Women’s Directorate).

1 in 2 women has experienced some form of sexual violence (Statistics Canada Survey, 1993).

1 in 3 women has experienced some form of sexual violence that can be legally defined as Rape (Statistics Canada Survey, 1993).

According to the Solicitor General, a sexual assault is reported in Canada every 25 minutes.

Another report, from the Canadian Advisory Council on the Status of Women, indicates that every 17 minutes a women is sexually assaulted.

57% of rapes happen while on dates (Ontario Women’s Directorate).

60% of sexual assaults occur in private homes (Ontario Women’s Directorate).

Only 1 in 3 assailants is a total stranger; 2 out of 3 assailants are friends, acquaintances, boyfriends, co-workers or relatives (Ontario Women’s Directorate).

83% or women with disabilities will be sexually assaulted during their lifetime (Ontario Women’s Directorate).

The majority of date and acquaintance rape victims are young women aged 16-24 (Ontario Women’s Directorate).

Date rape has the lowest reporting rate of all forms of sexual assault. It is estimated that only 1 % of all date rapes are reported to the police (Ontario Women’s Directorate).

A study found that 60% of Canadian college-aged males said that they would commit sexual assault if they were certain they would not get caught (Ontario Women’s Directorate).

<<Updated stats available only to registered law enforcement>>
From:  - circa 1996

And updated stats from:

Somewhere in America, a woman is raped every 2 minutes, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
<<update>> In the United States, 1.3 women are raped every minute.

In 1995, 354,670 women were the victims of a rape or sexual assault. (NationalCrime Victimization Survey. Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. Department of Justice, 1996.)

<<update>>That results in 78 rapes each hour, 1872 rapes each day, 56160 rapes each month and 683,280 rapes each year.

Over the last two years, more than 787,000 women were the victim of a rape or sexual assault. (National Crime Victimization Survey. Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S.Department of Justice, 1996.)
<<update through calculation>> 1,366,560 in two years.

The FBI estimates that 72 of every 100,000 females in the United States were raped last year. (Federal Bureau of Investigation, Uniform Crime Statistics, 1996.)

The FBI estimates that only 37% of all rapes are reported to the police. U.S. Justice Department statistics are even lower, with only 26% of all rapes or attempted rapes being reported to law enforcement officials.
<<update>> Only 16% of rapes are ever reported to the police.

According to the Justice Department, one in two rape victims are under age 18; one in six are under age 12. (Child Rape Victims, 1992. U.S. Department of Justice.)

Using Uniform Crime Report data for 1994 and 1995, the Bureau of Justice Statistics found that of rape victims who reported the offense to law enforcement, about 40% were under the age of 18, and 15% were younger than 12.4

<<expanded update>> 83% of rape cases are ages 24 or under.

1 out of every 3 American women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime.
The United States has the world's highest rape rate of the countries that publish such statistics.

It's 4 times higher than Germany, 13 times higher than England, and 20 times higher than Japan.

1 in 4 college women have either been raped or suffered attempted rape.

1 in 12 males students surveyed had committed acts that met the legal definition of rape.
From: same site as above

Thousands of women are smuggled into Japan every year. They arrive with promises of good paying jobs in hotels, restaurants, etc. The reality is to find a life of sexual slavery awaits them.
The trade in women is controlled by the yakuza crime syndicate. These women are forced to work as prostitutes against their own free will and receive no payment.

The yakuza rely on the terror of the concentration camp, verbal threats, beatings and rape. Japan is one of the regions top destinations for women forced into sexual slavery.

The trade accounts for 1% of Japan's GNP, as big as its annual defense budget. Little wonder the Japanese government does not care about these women. It appears it considers the dollar more important.

Sometimes the women escape these prostitution death camps but the retribution is swift and brutal. Usually it is targeted at both the women and their families. Traffickers gunned down a Thai man who was waiting at Bangkok airport to meet his daughter who had fled her captors.

The Japanese Army used comfort stations extensively until the war ended in the Pacific in 1945.

A majority of the women who provided sex for Japanese soldiers were forcibly taken from their families.

Family members were beaten or killed if they tried to rescue the women. The ages of the girls that were taken to the comfort houses ranged from 9 to 20. Some were married women with children.

Once the women arrived at the comfort station they were forced to have sex with 20 to 30 men a day. If they resisted they were beaten or killed.

A majority of the 80,000 to 200,000 comfort women were from Korea though others were recruited or kidnapped from China, Philippines, Burma, and Indonesia.

Many women became sterile from the repeated rapes. When the comfort women became useless because of their sickness, their milk was mixed with cyanide, their bodies taken to a cave and finally, the cave was blown up with a grenade.

The events that led to international awareness of the issue began in 1988. In that year, Professor Yun Chung Ok of Ehwa Women's University in Korea began to lead an activist group that conducted and presented research about the comfort women.

The Japanese government denied that women had been forced to work at comfort stations. After the war the Japanese got rid of any related documents and references. In 1991, three Korean former comfort women filed a lawsuit against the Japanese government.

In 1992 Professor Yoshimi Yoshiaki of Chuo University found wartime documents in the Library of the National Institute for Defense Studies that confirmed that the Japanese Forces had operated comfort stations. On the same day that excerpts from the documents were published in Japanese newspapers. The Japanese government finally admitted its involvement.

Currently, not only are visuals with pubic hair and exposed genitalia present, but available are visual depictions of hard-core sexual encounters which include bestiality, sadomasochism, necrophilia and incest; the characters involved may be adults, children or both and they can be in manga as well as in adult reading materials. There is a "Child Welfare Law" in Japan which prohibits child prostitution. However, there are no specific child pornography laws in Japan and SEM depicting minors are readily available and widely consumed. Most charges of obscenity presently are related to depictions of group or violent rape or realistic and graphic film or video depictions of sexual behaviors considered deviant and dangerous (as in Ai no corrida).

The character of the rape also changed markedly. Early in our period of observation many of the rapes were gang (more than a single attacker) rapes thus accounting for the number of offenders exceeding the number of rapes reported.
There are other stats available but not necessary. Although, anyone going to Japan (yes, I've been there several times) will know they can walk into most 7-11's and buy child porn - even the cartoon type.

Is China free from this type of repugnant treatment of women? No, of course not and anyone suggesting it is being less than honest - but regardless of what tekvacuous claims; it isn't the worst.

We meet again!

You telling the Chinese people to forgive what the Japanese did to us during world war 2.

Such as Nanjing mascre and the unit 731 in present day Heliongjian pronvince.

It is easy for you to say that, but if you are Chinese you will understand and especially to the victim family member.

Let me ask  you a a question. Can the  American forgive the Japanese of what they did in Peal Habor?.
And can the American shake the hand with Al qua da for what they did during 9/11?.

I know that 99.9% of American and including yourself  will answer No!.

So same thing with the Chinese. I might be right that you are splitism and really tries to hurt China , you support our enemy and you shoud go live in Japan instead of China.

Love  It or Leave It
