The Chinese are now accustomed to international visitors in China. As a hospitable nationality, the Chinese always open their arms and embrace good-manners cosmopolitans. Nonetheless, it is noteworthy that some foreign visitors are still not aware of what are good manners in China.
Ignoring proper manners in China won’t be catastrophic, yet it might undermine the excitement of your expedition. It is unattainable to be acquainted with all Chinese habits and customs within a short period of time. Reading handbooks pays off, however, as China enjoys so vast a territory, customs differ from place to place and the cultural chasm within China might be mammoth. This poses great challenge for visitors.
Providentially, the saying “When you are in Rome, do as the Romans do.” Still apply to China and Chinese people. Here, I’d like offer you two valuable tips.
1. Speak loudly in public. This practice in China is often misunderstood by foreign visitors, and might be deemed as a bad habit. No. it is our Chinese culture instead. According to our belief, it is important to speak up and act confidently in public; otherwise you might be considered to be surreptitious. When you are making a phone call, if you always whisper to your handset instead of spitting out your words, you act like a thief to all the Chinese onlookers. And if you peek at people at the same time, you’ll be thought to be masterminding sabotage!
2. Cigarettes rule. China is a paradise for smokers. No matter you are a smoker or not, you must know cigarettes play an essential role in Chinese social life. Always have one or two packs of cigarettes with you, and present one cigarette or two to your new acquaintance. Western brands are preffered, because they are new to most Chinese. You will find that cigarettes are actually very ideal intermediaries and your journey would be much smoother than you have ever expected. Smoke in public whenever possible, and you’ll make more friends if you do so. Don’t worry, most Chinese can condone, or even appreciate your smoking in public.
I’ll contribute more if I have aroused your curiosity or interest. Enjoy your odyssey in China!
