I just question the professionalism of the reporter

Don't say it's the first foreigner to be raped when its not.

I guess this girl shouldn't of been mentally retarded and this would of never happened.

See the d ...

Far worse is the implication that it is not safe for a lady to be out by herself. Women should not have to live in fear of being raped. As I am sure you are painfully aware, there are entire countries where it is not safe for a woman to go out unescorted and where the legal system is designed in favor of the rapists due to the cultural misbelief that women are inferior to men.

This is a de facto (and in some places I would consider to be less civilized, also de jure) restriction on the freedom of women.

Chairman Mao said (rough translation) "Women hold up half the sky", "妇女能顶半边天". My interpretation of that is that he was making it clear that women are of equal value to men, and that the work that women do is of equal value to the work that men do. While men and women are different (and as the French say, vive la difference!), they are equally valuable and equally important and should be regarded as such.

That Chairman Mao quote is my signature on my email, and I should add it here once I figure out how.

Right and we just can't feed into this thinking.  We have to reject it.

Blaming the victim is so prevalent that people don't even stop to question their own thinking.

Please measure in prominence and frequency to make a judgement.

how do you mean prominence and frequency?

I have an advantage so I won't luxuriate in your schoolboy error. Frequency does not ameliorate anything..Do you have to kill 20 people to get a life sentence? No, even attempted murder will suffice

Prominence? So if a crime goes unreported, it becomes less worthy?

Unless you can convince me that I've misread your effort, I suggest to to you that you did not think this effort through.

Anyways your point is out of context! My words that you re quoted was in response to someone that said white women was premium or something akin to this!

Blaming the victim is so prevalent that people don't even stop to question their own thinking.

And that is the root of the problem, in my opinion. People are unwilling to question their own thinking.

I have always like to think that one should never attribute something to malice when it can be explained by sheer stupidity. What is the root of these cultural beliefs that are so strongly slanted against women? We can see their current effects, but did they originate with malicious intent or were they, way back when, well-intentioned to protect women and were simply poorly designed and had the possibly unintended consequence of leading to the current state of women in these cultures?

It is obvious to many of us that the end result is bad, but it may help us to influence change if we can identify the true underlying cause and address that reason in a more constructive manner. Most cultures strive to protect women. Without discussing the ethical and moral implications, from strictly a biological standpoint one male can impregnate multiple women, and thus women are vital to the preservation and growth of a culture or a race. Most cultures that I have encountered manifest that primal understanding by protecting women and treating them with special deference.

I have found that in most cultures where arranged marriages are practiced that women are not treated as well as in cultures where arranged marriages are not common. When Europe in general moved away from arranged marriages, the treatment of women improved dramatically. I don't know which came first as far as improved treatment of women or the elimination of arranged marriages, but the two seem to influence each other. I am neither an historian nor a sociologist. This is simply speculation.

Everyone should be encouraged to be safe.  I agree.

But blaming the victim for rape has to stop b ...

True and I said so....some people are to blame. Not all.

I am sure it is a subject matter close to your heart. Mine too. Look,, I'm a bloke and you see some girls, out there, they need endless attention from men.

If one of these men is a rogue in terms of propensity? Awful subject. My final thought on it and this caused hilarity at the time. It even led to a new word, DIGGLE!

What happened is not funny but the dude's defence was.

A disgraced ex-solicitor left ruined by a sex scandal almost 20 years ago has been hit with an Asbo - banning him from every pub in his hometown.

Angus Diggle became a cause celebre in 1993 after he was convicted of the attempted rape of a fellow lawyer whilst wearing just his frilly dress cuffs, spectacles and a luminous green condom.

The Oxford educated bachelor - who had earlier taken the Edinburgh solicitor to a Highland Ball - was said to have told a policeman: 'I have spend £200 on her. Why can't I do what I did to her?'

Diggle was initially jailed for three years cut to two on appeal and served 12 months before being freed.

He made an unsuccessful attempt to become a Tory MP before being banned from practising law.
