China will raise its defense budget by 10.7 percent to 720.2 billion yuan ($114.3 billion) in 2013, according to the government's budget report submitted to the National People's Congress.  China spent 650.6 billion yuan on national defense in 2012, an increase of 11.6 percent than the previous year, says the report to be reviewed at the first session of the 12th National People's Congress.

Pro view (5)

Despite the rapid rise, China's military spending remains low compared with other major military states in the world. And China should boost national defence amid hostile neighbors to safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Con view (1)

China is still facing kinds of problems as many people out there can't even afford to feed themselves. And a big increase in defence budget will become an excuse for the West to hype China threat, which is inconsistent with China's peaceful rise.
