China will raise its defense budget by 10.7 percent to 720.2 billion yuan ($114.3 billion) in 2013, according to the government's budget report submitted to the National People's Congress.  China spent 650.6 billion yuan on national defense in 2012, an increase of 11.6 percent than the previous year, says the report to be reviewed at the first session of the 12th National People's Congress.

Pro view (5)

Despite the rapid rise, China's military spending remains low compared with other major military states in the world. And China should boost national defence amid hostile neighbors to safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Con view (1)

China is still facing kinds of problems as many people out there can't even afford to feed themselves. And a big increase in defence budget will become an excuse for the West to hype China threat, which is inconsistent with China's peaceful rise.

    IF china is ready & commit to combat then the answer is a big YES (that's what the US does 24/7) if not then why bother such a waste in budget when china can improve the rural regions  {:soso_e114:}{:soso_e113:}

    That's an interesting question. I think given the sheer size of China's population, a further rise in military expenditure is understandable. China also has ambitions to become a serious player in terms of aircraft carriers and stealth fighters and all of that needs to be financed.
    The United States does seem to fear China - opinion polls confirm that. But look at the military fear mongering spread by the United States. There is no reason for China to reign in spending on their army, navy and airforce. They have the money and ambition so they'll go for it and nobody can really stop them...

    Power balance means no war. The United States will never fight China as long as China keeps getting stronger.

    According to some Governments, China does not have a choice ..

    1) India ...Indian Navy vessels easily outperform and outnumber China's Navy
    2) Japan .. Japan leads in every category of military hardware .. in number and performance .. (Except nukes).. in a conventional war ...China would loose easily
    3) US ..US goverment report  states .. in one simple word about Chinese Defence Force .. "GARBAGE"

    China .... your gonna have to lift your game ...
