I didn't choose to have a Chinese name when I arrived in China (hell, I didn't even know what "ni hao" meant!) but my colleagues gave me one and used it all the time to try and introduce me to speaking Chinese, didn't work very well though because my Putonghua still sucks. It's a shame that there isn't a uniform Putonghua around China rather than very localised versions, or I'd speak it a lot better!
