Hey, JF, didn't you say this "freedom of speech" thing is to protect people against the government ...
No: it is offending and attacking  a foreign international culture.

International culture?

Now jihad is supposed to be a respected piece of culture?

Since when?  Their own governments and people largely abhor them.

Religious militants can and should be mocked and offended.

We are taught all our lives of how wrong our past was in terms of religion.  The crusades, the spanish inquisition, heresy laws, burning witches at the stake, etc.

But now we are supposed to respect those who wage 'holy wars'?

That's too much to ask seneca.

And why hold back the populace with this idea that religious extremism represents the majority population?

Why should offending what should be offended, taken as generalizing across an entire population?

Hey, JF, didn't you say this "freedom of speech" thing is to protect people against the government? Any citizen has the sacred right to criticise their own government?

Correct.  And this can only be protected by keeping government from making laws restricting our speech.

Once they start making laws restricting speech for religious groups - that's a slippery slope no one wants to go down.

I can just see the christian nutters making education 'offensive' because it teaches opposing views to creationism.

You can't have selective freedom of speech - it doesn't work.  Eventually it will be only what the majority wants to hear and the minority voice will not be heard.

We can't have that.

That was a good comment, thank you.

Maybe I expressed myself ambiguously:
What I meant was the message of that advert targets people who may not have a very educated idea of the topic addressed in the advert - the underground travellers, the readers of political slogans. It also targets those already converted to Islamophobia, of course; these folks will feel vindicated in their rabidly xenophobic views when such political messagesare broadcast on vehicles of New York's mass transit railways.

It's 2012 - do you honestly believe there are still people in the world who do not understand what the term 'jihad' means?

Not in america at least where the ad is getting shown.

Believe me, we all know exactly who the ad is targeting.

Sorry, you misquote me again.

I never said "Jihad is an 'international culture'!"

But the ad doesn't target islam, but jihad specifically.

So unless you are saying that all muslims support these jihadis, than no one is insulting an entire culture or religion.

In my own view, the underground railways have no business advertising for or against jihads.

Nor ...

So there should not be any anti-war signs ever?

Really?

You are fanatics in your country! You need a constitutionally-sanctioned privilege to feel right a ...

Look, we're never going to have a country like China, whose government treats their citizens as children and makes all the decisions for them.

We'll take all the bad as long as it means we have freedom.  A concept you seem to know nothing about.
