A look back at China's filial piety culture
[
By Ye Xiaowen (People's Daily Overseas Edition)       08:08, May 16, 2012 Edited and translated by People's Daily Online

Foreigners usually send carnations as Mother's Day flowers, while the Chinese people prefer Hemerocallis fulva. Parents' love can hardly be reciprocated by their children. We can take a look back at filial piety culture, while thanking our mothers.

It is undeniable that throughout Chinese history, filial piety has been a major cornerstone of the Chinese culture, and has taken its root in the hearts of the Chinese people.

Admittedly, feudal filial piety exerted a considerable adverse impact on the ancient civilized country that has existed for thousands of years. Lu Xun criticized that the old feudal ethics were savage and cannibal.

We should accept the good part of filial piety culture and reject its bad part. By removing the feudal dross of "three cardinal guides and five constant virtues" and rejecting ignorant practices such as "burying son to save mother,” we can restore the effects of filial piety in saving the maturely rich yet spiritually barren modern people.

Modernization has greatly increased living standards but has failed to provide due care to their spirituality. Living a fast-paced life full of temptations, modern people feel insecure, and seldom have a moment of peace. Desires are engulfing ideals, changes are shaking beliefs, and mind, spirit, and faith are being materialized and abandoned. How can people live a happy life if they do not even care for their raison d'etre?

"Settling down and getting on with one's pursuit,” as a traditional topic of the Chinese culture, is not only the Confucianism's pursuit but also an essence of the Confucianism.

This topic can be extended into three appointments regarding the life. First, loving life and pursuing happiness. It is the fundamental appointment for "settling down and getting on with one's pursuit” and also the impetus of the current modernization.Second, respecting life and using moral to restrain it. It is the common appointment for pursuing happiness. Third, revering life and ultimately caring life. It is the future appointment for pursuing happiness.

The current expanding modernization and market economy are satisfying the fundamental appointment for "settling down and getting on with one's pursuit,” but also allowing individuals to excessively pursue materials, and even weakening or eliminating the common appointment and future appointment for pursuing happiness.

Therefore, the phenomenon that "people will do everything for the profit” has occurred, and immoral behaviors, such as "being close to the profit but far to the relative,” "forgetting honor at the sight of money,” "seeing nothing but the profit,” "harming others to benefit oneself” and even "committing a crime to get the profit”,have appeared frequently during the course of the modernization which promotes thequality of life and human progress.

"People urgently look for the medicine for the spirit only when they find the medicine for the body is no longer effective.” Inheriting and carrying forward the proper core of the "filial piety” culture is good for getting back the two appointments of "respecting life” and "revering life” and is also good for curing the modern illness of pursuing only materials.

An essence of the "filial piety” culture is the "mutual respect among lives.” The morals advocated by the "filial piety” culture, such as "supporting parents,” "respecting parents” and "treating others' parents like one's own parents,” require us to respect not only lives of our parents but also lives of others' parents.

Then, the "filial piety” culture is raised from "showing filial piety and respect to parents, being kind to children, being friendly to relatives and being loyal to the mother country ”to "helping all people of the world love what they love.”

The second essence of the "filial piety” culture is the "reverence.” We should not revere ghosts, but it does not mean we should revere nothing. The principle of the religion is "revering the god,” but the principle of the "filial piety” culture is "respecting people,” including the parents, predecessors and ancestors. If we say the money and profit wash and weaken the morals of people, then revering people will rebuild the morals of people.

Adam Smith wrote the books "The Wealth of Nations” and "The Theory of Moral Sentiments,” in which he expressed that the market economy must be restrained by morals. However, it is still a difficult problem that how to cure people's modern illnessof pursing only materials and calling back their respect and reverence to the life.

Today, we are making efforts in various aspects to build up and practice a socialist core value system. It is not a bad idea to open up our mind more and do such things as reviewing the "filial piety” culture, getting rid of its bad parts, finding its universal values and developing its functions that meet the requirements from the development of the socialist market economy and the construction of a harmonious society.

Only those who love their hometowns love their countries, and only those who respect their parents are loyal to their countries. For a person, the order should be "cultivating oneself first, then regulating the family, then governing the nation and then realizing the world peace."
