Gary Locke, who is known to be low-key and frugal, is back in the mainland media limelight after reportedly saying he could not afford the official hotel for the Boao Forum for Asia, which ended on Tuesday.

News reports say Locke did not choose the five-star Sofitel, where other senior government officials were staying, because "it's too expensive", citing an aide to the envoy.

The Sofitel's room rates were three times the rate the US government allows for official visits, the aide was quoted as saying.

Locke ended up in a four-star hotel nearby, where the most expensive suite costs 940 yuan (HK$1,159) a night.

Well, Mr Gary Locke, rest assured that you will now be eternally hated by Chinese officials.

You can say he is a poseur, he is just putting on a show to humiliate China, and he is just a politician.

Problem is none -- yes, none -- of the Chinese offcials at this level have put on a similar "show" so far.

They are not bothered? I don't know.

Quite true! I visited the island during the rugby seven's weekend and the price for a normal room at the IBIS North Point was rated at HK$ 1800 per night, no breakfast included!

What about  Xi Jinping and his visits to Iowa?

Whether Xi's visit is a show or not, you are asking? Yeah, I think it was a show, a pretty good one, considering his experience.

But in terms of money -- thrift, frugality, call it what you like -- it's not the same as that of Gary Locke.

Besides, it's not the first time that the US ambassador has publicly "shamed" Chinese officials.
