BEIJING - China's food watchdog on Friday urged McDonald's to rectify its operations after a TV station exposed one branch of the fast-food chain selling expired products.
Chiefs of McDonald's China were "invited" for a talk by the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), and were urged to apologize to consumers and conduct a strict overhaul of food safety measures at its restaurants, according to a statement from the SFDA.
McDonald's China issued the requested apology, saying it will adjust its operations, enhance management and strictly implement food safety standards so as to safeguard consumers' health rights.
Reader Chinese Food commented, "Agreed! Cooked chicken doesn't spoil in 30 minutes if properly handled! But of course, McD have set themselves a standard, and consumers expect them to adhere to it. We often take away McD food and consume it after 30 minutes with no serious consequences! So what's this hoohah about?
On the broader picture, Chinese foods are even worse; prepared in unsanitary conditions with unhygienic kitchen practices often exposed by undercover reporters on TV; so filthy one can vomit when watching it! Yet there is hardly a whimper from the Chinese consumers; what hypocrites!
And, I've personally seen food handlers in Chinese bakeries picking up food that has accidentally fallen on the filthy floor, and putting it back on the display shelves for sale to some unsuspecting consumers! Chinese cooks have been seen chopping up cabbages right in front of customers in supermarket foodstalls and emptying the chopped cabbage straight into the frying pan, without washing it!
Yes I agree with the other poster who said that KFC and McDonald's staff have been seen leaving the toilet without washing their hands. I bear witness to that too! There are countless instances of poor hygiene we see everyday!
Targeting just the foreign food outlets misses the whole point of food safety.
BTW, these 'foreign' food outlets are run by local Chinese staff whose hygiene practices leave much to be desired! So, before you guys go jumpy over 'foreign' food outlets, remember, the offending is done by your very own compatriots!
Yes, we should go after offenders, but be fair, don't pick your targets! "
How do you see the behaviors of McDonald's and KFC? What do you think we should learn from them?
