English is one of the most popular majors in the world, as it prepares people well for a variety of career opportunities, either in business, finance, media or law. For those who just like reading for fun or want to learn more about Western cultures, it's also vital to be well-versed in English language.

Here is a list of the top 10 universities for English in the world, according to the QS World University Rankings 2011/2012 drawn from surveys of over 33,000 global academics and 16,000 graduate employers and based on research teaching, employability and internationalization.

1. Harvard University  

Harvard, the world's second best university behind Cambridge, came out on top for English. Harvard is the oldest and most prestigious university in the US and receives the largest finanancial endowment of any academic institution in the world. Not only is it notoriously competitive, it is also expensive by UK standards, with students paying yearly tuition fees of approximately £25,000. Harvard's English department's website provides a template letter to "Mom and Dad" for students who need to convince their parents that English as a degree is useful in the real world. It concludes: "Studying English will prepare me for any field that values careful reading, precise thinking and the ability to write clear, persuasive prose."

2. University of Oxford  牛津大学

Oxford, the oldest university in the English-speaking world, takes second place for English, and is the largest English department in the UK with 900 undergraduates and 300 postgraduates. It counts an impressive list of authors and poets amongs its former students, including Aldous Huxley, Philip Larkin, J.R.R Tolkien, Evelyn Waugh, C.S Lewis and John Betjeman. The university's library, perhaps Oxford's most famous landmark, stocks every book published in the UK and Ireland.

3. University of Cambridge   剑桥大学

Cambridge, the world's number one university, comes third for English and counts the likes of Jeremy Paxman, Emma Thompson, Sam Mendes and Stephen Fry as former students. According to the university's Faculty of English homepage, "the experience of reading English at Cambridge is especially rich because the course combines lectures and seminars provided by the Faculty with close teaching organised by the colleges. The choice of which college to apply to will depend on such incidental issues as your taste in architecture."

4. University of California, Berkeley  加州大学伯克利分校

The University of California, Berkeley, has shared a total of 11 Pulitzer Prizes between its staff, alumni and researchers. Its libraries cover a combined area of 12 acres and form the largest library complexes in the world. Author Irving Stone studied at Berkeley (BA 1923) and wrote the novel Lust for Life which was made into an Academy Award-winning film with Kirk Douglas.

5. Yale University  耶鲁大学

Yale, the thirds oldest and third best overall university in the US comes fifth in the world for its English degree course. It is known as a liberal, forward-thinking university with a student body deriving from a variety of ethnic, national and socio-economic backgrounds and promotes an open campus for the gay community. Its creative writing course, which forms part of the English major is considered one of the best in America.

6. Columbia University  哥伦比亚大学

Columbia University is responsible for each year handing out the Pulitzer Prize and has an English department that ranks sixth in the world. One of the most expensive US universities at which to study, Columbia charges approximately £27,500 a year in fees. The university educated American authors such as Jack Kerouac, J D Salinger and Hunter S Thompson.

The first institution of higher learning in Upper Canada, the University of Toronto includes journalist Malcolm Gladwell and writer Margaret Atwood as ex-alumni.
