China set targets for increasing production capacity at key polysilicon and solar cell makers, part of the government’s plan to ensure its companies survive a slump in prices.

China wants each “leading” company to have 50,000 tons a year of polysilicon capacity by 2015 and targets 5 gigawatts for each of its top solar-cell makers, according to a five-year plan posted on the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology website today.

that is the ticket to much money waits on the side lines for the efficiencies to improve. when the are good enough now to change the world. and us americans wont be bothered with solar as a real alternative to fossil until the hedge funds stop shorting the sector by then chinas government will  have sown the market up. clearing the way for american companies to cry foul and ask for subsidies amid much stirring of the pot.  i am not saying that we wait for china just that people are slow to change and while i dont agree that china is practising "unfair trade" i am sure our politicians will use it as an excuse to bring money to the sector  unfortunately at the risk of alienating or friends abroad . i dont  agree with this practice but the more solar is built the better off the world is. i think solar is not only an alternative to fossil but in some cases better in others it will never compare.

The world not only China and Germany need to move to solar power as fast as possible. If Chinese companies are producing a glut on the world market that is great because it will lead to lower prices making it affordable for more people. Replacing fuel burning generators with solar power is the ideal way to reduce pollution throughout the world.

It's one of my favorite industries. I have a considerable amount of money invested in it. There's a lot of Yuan, Euros, Dollars and Yen flowing through the trenches of this business. The Germans are playing a big role in all this success.

The glut is a roll of the dice. I like what China is doing here but it's very risky. The world market can react in a negative way and China (being the dominate player) may be left with a broken sword in a very technologically and futuristic fight. I like it though. I like seeing China take these dangerous risks. The payout is big, the benefits are grand.

I hope they are successful for the benefit of the world; fossil fuels and uranium are destroying the quality of the air we breathe, and our water supplies.

i tend to think that when china puts these panels up on roofs in its government manufacturing facilities then the synergies compound allowing even lower production costs meaning competition is nearly impossible on a cost basis ,the only risk is that china can produce so much that the ones made now are less expensive than the ones on the roofs of the factory they are made in but that does not reflect their output to date or the fact of american protectionism . i honestly believe that if china can produce enough they will force american companies to either quit or run at a loss with subsidies or start a import ban making america in the eyes of the world a violator of fair trade agreements or force us to adopt socialist tendencies in this sector  with the same effect.
