As one of the most important national treasures, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has gained more and more attention at home and abroad. More college students have chosen to study TCM as their major. The following universities, featuring complete disciplines and accomplished faculty, are renowned as the best places to study TCM.

10. Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (辽宁中医药大学)

Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (LNUTCM), founded in 1958 in Shenyang, is one of the earliest higher education institutions specialized in traditional Chinese medicine in China, and is the only university in the province to train and educate professionals in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Pharmacy, Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Chinese Massage and other related disciplines.


The university now has five disciplines of medicine, science, engineering, management and arts. It has more than 10,000 students and offers 21 master programs and 10 doctoral programs.

9. Hunan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (湖南中医药大学)

Established in 1960 in Changsha, Hunan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (HNUTCM) was developed from Hunan Chinese Medicine Specialization School founded in 1934 and Hunan Traditional Chinese Medicine Vocational School established in 1953. Now it's a primarily teaching-oriented college emphasizing Traditional Chinese Medicine and Chinese Pharmacology.


HNUTCM has about 16,000 students, of which about 450 are overseas students from over 20 countries and regions, including the US, UK and Japan. There are 18 disciplines in the undergraduate school, 17 master degree programs and 13 doctoral programs.

8. Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (天津中医药大学)

Founded in 1958, Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TUTCM) is one of the oldest universities of traditional Chinese Medicine in China. After over 50 years of operation, the school now offers 16 undergraduate programs, 27 masters programs, 18 Ph.D. programs and one post-doctoral fellowship.


The International University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (IUTCM), authorized by the State Education Committee, established in the school in 1992, and has become the national center for foreign students to study traditional Chinese medicine. Each year over 1,000 students from 20 countries and regions study at the university. In addition, the IUTCM has established cooperation with universities, research and medical institutions in more than 30 countries around the world.

7. Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine (黑龙江中医药大学)

Set up in 1954 in Harbin, Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine (HLJUCM) originated from the Heilongjiang Chinese Medicine School for Advanced Study. In 1996, with the approval of Ministry of Education, the school changed to its current name. After nearly 60 years, the university has grown into a key Chinese medicine school which has an accomplished faculty as well as well-developed research and treatment facilities.

The HLJUCM now has nine colleges, seven affiliated hospitals, 69 training bases, and offers 17 doctoral programs and 28 postgraduate programs. Currently, there are about 14,000 full-time students at school, 390 of them are from other countries.

6. Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (山东中医药大学)

Formerly known as Shandong College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1958, the university changed its name to Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SUTCM) in 1996, and developed into a key university for higher education of traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese pharmacy, and combination of traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine.


So far, the school has 22 undergraduate disciplines, involving medicine, science, literature and management, 44 master programs and 15 doctoral programs. According to the university, there are about 18,600 full-time students, 400 of which are from overseas.

5. Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (成都中医药大学)

Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (CDUTCM), founded in 1956, is one of the four oldest universities for traditional Chinese medicine study in China, together with TCM universities in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Formerly named as Chengdu Traditional Chinese Medicine College, the school got it current name in 1995 and specializes in Chinese pharmacology, traditional Chinese medicine, ear-nose-throat, and acupuncture & moxibustion and Tuina.


The university is one of the first universities which can confer masters and doctorate degrees, and also offers postdoctoral workshops. There are 29 undergraduate disciplines in the school, including science, engineering, literature, management and agriculture, 58 master programs and 19 doctoral programs. The CDUTCM has about 20,000 students, 2,000 of which are graduate students.

4. Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (南京中医药大学)

Established in 1954, Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (NJUCM) is the oldest established university of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China. As a founder and advocator of TCM higher education, NJUCM enjoys a reputation as "the Cradle of Chinese TCM Higher Education" both at home and abroad.


The school has become a leading university of higher TCM education in the country. It serves as a WHO Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine and a Ministry of Health-designated International Acupuncture Training Center. The school has 17 undergraduate majors, 29 master programs and 22 doctoral programs. There are currently more than 15,000 full-time students, 900 of them are international students or students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
