Veteran film-makers Martin Scorsese (l) and Steven Spielberg were both recognised at the event, both for 3D movies. The former received the best director prize for Hugo, while the latter's The Adventures of Tintin was named best animated feature.

The Artist and The Descendants won the two best film awards, making them frontrunners for the best picture prize at next month's Oscars. The makers of The Artist celebrated their win with the film's canine co-star Uggie.

Other television prizes went to Peter Dinklage (left) for medieval fantasy Game of Thrones, Claire Danes for terrorist drama Homeland and former Friends star Matt LeBlanc for his satirical portrayal of himself in BBC Two sitcom Episodes.

Dame Helen Mirren and Sidney Poitier joined forces to present actor Morgan Freeman (centre) with a lifetime achievement award named after legendary Hollywood film-maker Cecil B DeMille. "My passion in life has always been acting," said the 74-year-old recipient.
