The Guardian newspaper has exposed slave labour conditions among Chinese workers in Britian (Sat 27 March 2004). A Chinese reporter worked undecover to expose the shocking conditions and low pay which Chinese workers are subjected.

Many of the workers are employed as contactors preparing meat products for large supermarkets including the national chain, Sainsbury's. They generally receive less than half the pay of permanent workers and additionally have to pay various "fees" to so-called gangmasters who arrange the work. They live in appalling conditions and are often "treated like animals" by their bosses.

The newspaper story reads like something out of Dickens. Capitalism in all its 21st Century glory.

Normal

that is normal I feel in western world. I study in one of the London business schools and well the case you mentioned is everywhere here. I mean go to New York or Chicago where i visited china towns, its same.
There were reports that some chinese never left the china town all their life since their illigal immigration. They are are paid to be protected as usual.

The low pay and ganster related areas exists when theres is a strong gathering of chinese people yet with certain crowd of the uneducated people who are easily manipulated by the mafia gangsters.

They are subject to low pay because they do not know the rights either. It is also in Ireland, Dublin, a country I lived for quite few years. Its more capitalism way true, every system has their bad side, and this is one of the bad side.

You go to Scandinavia country where I lived most of my life(btw I was born in china) the system of socialist system eradicates much of these things, also on the fact that theres too few chinese to make such a sort of corrupt system as in other big china towns in the western world.

I don't expect the western government to care too much about it either I guess as usual -_-

Really Sad

Very sad to read the two posts above. Really sad.

Though I and my family  live in a relatively stable and quite substantial life in south china, I  feel sad and near losing my words, after learning my countrymen who have emigrated (out of self will, or forced, lured, cheated to leave for other countries),  who are now suffering at the hands of the hooligans, gangs, snakeheads, exploiters, capitalists...you name them..

Thus, population control and education of all nationals must be listed as of paramount importance and urgence, for China.

It won't be easy to make a "promised" big fortune, overseas, by washing dishes, or picking up fish!

Sigh

I feel so pity for fate of workers like that. They went to uk embracing a nice dream. When they woke up, they found their identities had become illegal. I believe that not only Chinese, but illegal immigrants of any other countries would be treated like this. This is a problem we should apeal to un to solve.

All this under a so-called 'Labour' government!

What really depresses me as a Brit. is that this is happening under a Labour government which is supposed to stand for the workers. Our Tony knows as much about the working class as the Queen. He comes from a family of rich lawyers, went to an exclusive private school and Oxford University. The Labour Party is a disgrace to its name and origins.

When I was teaching in Beijing I always used to tell my students to stay away from the West - untill they had enough money to go for a holiday! There are far more opportunities in China and your money goes much further.

Thanks for your posts. I'm glad so many care about the sufferings of innocent (as bchung says naive) Chinese workers in the UK and eslewhere.
