Black Dragon Pond is a popular summer resort located in Miyun County about 93 kilometers northeast of Beijing. Covering an area of 9 km², the scenic spot is a four-kilometer-long deep valley with a drop in elevation of 220 meters. Peaks on the south and north side rise 300 to 500 meters, while the bottom of the valley is at 150 to 370 meters. The valley itself is narrow and winding, with precipitous cliffs towering on the both sides. The area is home to 18 lagoons and three waterfalls, which are like shining pearl pillars erected in the valley.
Major views include the Tongtian Waterfall, hanging over a sheer cliff with a height of 50 meters, the Miren Cave, which serves as a passageway to the top of the Tongtian Waterfall, Luoyan Pond, Suspending Pond, Sinking Pond and Bottomless Pond. The masterpiece is, of course, Black Dragon Pond, although only 4 - 5 km² in area, reaches as deep as 25.6 meters and is known as the deepest pond in the Beijing region. Every summer, visitors from the city often flock to the pond to escape scalding temperatures. While in the winter, varied frozen waterfalls and icicles surrounding the lagoons offer a different excuse to trek out of the city.
