It was granted by Peiyang University (today called Tianjin University)

It is a master graduation certificate of Tsinghua University, which was granted in the early years of Republic of China Era. The "teacher blank" is filled with first-class scholars' names like Wang Guowei, Liang Qichao, Zhao Yuanren and Chen Yinque.

中国最早的大学文凭之争

。据复旦校史记载，晚清时期尚无“毕业文凭”的说法，而称“卒业文凭”。复旦公学在上海吴淞办学的6年半里，有4届学生共计57人毕业，也就意味着这样的“卒业文凭”，复旦公学一共只发了57张。历经96年的沧桑变幻，张彝这张1／57如今依然保存完好。泛黄的纸张4开报纸一般大小，四边均缀有金色双龙戏珠的图案；“复旦公学”四个字分印四角；文凭上方朱印光绪三十三年十一月二十一日的慈禧太后上谕，主要是勉励读新式学堂的学生学习知识报效国家的话；下方写着“上海商务印书馆代印”几个蝇头小字；主体部分则记载了各门功课的毕业考试成绩。和如今的毕业文凭不同，文凭上清晰地记录着张彝的国文、法文、伦理、化学、三角、体操等12门功课的毕业考试具体分数，精确到几分几厘。总平均分为80分8厘，在校三年的总平均分达到77分7厘。“卒业文凭”签发者为当时复旦公学的监督(校长)高风谦和教务长李登辉。


正上方用英文印着“中华帝国学院”，右下用毛笔手书竖写着“山海关北洋铁路官学堂张孝基”，表明这张毕业证是颁给当时学生张孝基的。其下签发毕业证的“监督”，相当于现在的校长一栏上写着“蓝轶符”，查西南交大校史记录，蓝轶符1899年到1900任该校最早前身山海关ik洋铁路官学堂的“监督”。毕业证正中填写张孝基从1898年至1900年在山海关北洋铁路官学堂就读完成正规课程毕业考试的成绩，包括English、Chinese、Machanics、Drawing等7门主修课，在Chinese的成绩一栏填写有“文义通顺”字样。
