WONDERING: It is too hard to comprehend why any actor / actress, foreign or local, needs to interfere in the domestic political affairs when he or she is performing to popularise and enrich himself or herself. While it is nice to see a foreigner, Bale, acting to tell the world of a past murderous empire of its most brutal and inhuman atrocities; but he has to learn to respect the laws and social orders of China instead of trying to act for various 3rd_parties.  What was Bale trying achieve is a big question mark or who is acting upon an actor is another bigger question mark, isn't it?

BEIJING - The actorChristian Bale was assaulted by government-backed guards on Thursday when hetried to visit a blind lawyer who has been illegally confined to his home ineastern Shandong Province.

The lawyer, ChenGuangcheng, has emerged as a cause célèbre among the country’s rightsadvocates, dozens of whom have been similarly roughed up when they tried tobreak through the cordon that local officials have placed around Mr. Chen’svillage. The encounter, captured by a CNN camera crew who accompanied him on the eight-hour drive fromBeijing to Dongshigu village, promises to become a public relations debacle forChina, which has been eagerly promoting Mr. Bale’s latest movie, “The Flowersof War,” which premiered last Sunday at the one of the capital’s most importantgovernment buildings. Directed by ZhangYimou, the movie was partly financed by loans from a state-owned bank and it isthe country’s foreign film submission for the Academy Awards. At $94 million,it is also said to be the most expensive Chinese-made film ever. Officials herehave expressed hope that it might earn China its first Oscar.

The footage of Mr.Bale’s attempted visit is dramatic. In it, he is seen pleading with the men whoguard Dongshigu’s entry points and then retreating as they push and punch him.“Why can I not visit this free man?” he asks repeatedly. The men, dressed inthick green winter coats respond with shouts of “Go away.” Even after they haveretreated into their car, the group, which included a translator, was chasedfor 40 minutes by men in a gray van. ... ...  .... ...... ......... .

Good reasoning but on a personal moral standard, it is a cheap publicity that has the touch of "bashing China and Chinese people" infront of some jealous American politicians like a double edged sword tending to cut himself too.

The Nazis had their thugs, too.

For the dirty job of roughing up some inconvenient people.
It seems to be common in China and a daily routine "to discipline" people - even and most of all in police stations.

I am sure that ordinary Chinese do not approve this.

"What was Bale trying achieve is a big.... .."
You can judge this from legal viewpoint. There are some Chinese tried to visit Chen Guangcheng too (Please read the the thread "Very caring and brave Chinese.." in this forum). Would you ask what were they trying to achieve too?
And what are the guards trying to achieve?
What is the government trying to achieve by illegally confined Chen over a year? to shut him up from talking to his lawyers, friends in Beijing and the media?
