What Makes a Good Leader?

Ability to solve problems, resolve conflicts, make decisions and recommendations, implement.

Problems happen when there is a difficult situation that needs a solution. To solve a problem a person requires ingenuity as well as facts and skills to move from the present state toward some desired goal. An effective leader is able to identify whether a problem is a new one or a recurrence. He understands that a problem is associated with relationships, values, perceptions and beliefs.
A superior with problem solving and trouble shooting skills will handle a situation by identifying the symptoms and causes. He sees it in advance the outcomes and the effects on handling it in a certain way. Problem solving is related to creative, systematic and strategic thinking skills.
A leader who uses his mind to reason and reflect on his and other people's judgments and opinions will help him decide, resolves conflicts and arrives at a conclusion. He finds alternatives and resources to either overcome, transform or avoid the problem.

Two theories on leadership... trait and contingency.

Trait theory is that a leader is a leader in all situations.  This theory is that great leaders are born, not made.

Contingency theory believes that whoever has the best skills will be the leader.  If the group needs someone who can pilot the jet plane, then the jet pilot is the leader (at least until the plane lands).

Usually, it is a combination.  Few group and leader dynamics are obvious.  Since people are the consistent element in all group situations, someone who is good with people will be a good leader-- giving rise to the trait theory.  When the situation calls for an expert in English or outdoor skills, then people who are expert in these areas will become the leaders, giving rise to the contingency theory.

Whatever your leadership abilities are today, they can be improved by studying leadership and management... and not just the biographies of great leaders but the science of group dynamics.

Writer's real name is Lau Guan Kim.  lau_guan_kim is for commentary and analysis. He writes also under another alter ego jinseng. I will respond to good reasoned debate. Mudslingers shall be ignored. What I do not like are ignorance, stupidity, chauvinism and bigotry. The other party has as much right as I have until it resorts to insults and nuisance.
